Classic Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar

  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder

  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)

  • 1 cup (240ml) milk

  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil (or melted butter)

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water (or hot brewed coffee for an intense flavor boost)

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 3 ½ cups (440g) powdered sugar

  • ½ cup (45g) cocoa powder

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • ¼ cup (60ml) heavy cream (or milk)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the pans

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper for easy removal.

Step 2: Mix dry ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3: Add wet ingredients

Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth and well combined.

Step 4: The secret to moist cake

Stir in boiling water (or coffee). The batter will be thin – that’s what makes the cake extra moist.

Step 5: Bake

Divide the batter evenly between the pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 6: Cool

Let cakes cool for 10 minutes in the pans before transferring to a wire rack. Allow to cool completely before frosting.

🍫 Frosting the Cake

  1. Beat butter until creamy.

  2. Add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Mix well.

  3. Add vanilla and cream/milk gradually until light and fluffy.

  4. Spread frosting between layers, then cover the top and sides generously.

🎉 Serving & Storing

  • Slice and serve with a glass of cold milk or a cup of coffee.

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days, or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

💡 Pro Tips

✔ Use hot coffee instead of water for richer flavor.
✔ Don’t overbake – check the cake a few minutes before the timer ends.
✔ For extra indulgence, add chocolate ganache or sprinkle with chocolate chips.

✨ And that’s it! You now have the perfect classic chocolate cake that’s moist, fluffy, and utterly delicious. Once you try this recipe, it might just become your go-to dessert for every celebration.
